UNESCO LAUNCHES NEW INITIATIVES FOR “GREENING EDUCATION”

The Greening Education Partnership is a global initiative launched by UNESCO to address the climate crisis through education.

It involves 80 member states and aims to transform educational institutions into Green Schools, integrating sustainable practices and curricula to prepare learners for climate challenges.

This initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Target 4.7 and focuses on four key pillars of transformative education.

Goals of the Greening Education Partnership

  • Transforming Schools: Aim to convert 50% of schools, colleges, and universities into Green Schools by 2030.
  • Green Curriculum: Ensure that 90% of countries have a green national curriculum by 2030.
  • Climate-Ready Learners: Prepare students to become active participants in sustainability initiatives.

Four Pillars of Transformative Education

Greening Schools

  • Promote sustainable practices in schools.
  • Reduce environmental impact through energy and water conservation, waste management, and eco-friendly infrastructure.

Greening Curriculum

  • Integrate climate change and sustainability topics into national curricula.
  • Foster critical thinking and problem-solving skills related to environmental issues.

Greening Teacher Training and Education Systems’ Capacities

  • Enhance teacher training to include sustainability education.
  • Build capacity in education systems to support sustainable practices.

Greening Communities

  • Engage communities in sustainability initiatives.
  • Foster a sense of responsibility and global citizenship among learners.

Need for the Greening Education Partnership

  • Limited Understanding: 70% of youth surveyed by UNESCO reported a limited understanding of climate change based on school education.
  • Curriculum Gaps: Nearly 47% of national curricula in 100 countries do not feature climate change, indicating significant gaps that need to be addressed.

Principles of a Green School

  • Holistic Education: Focus on critical thinking, creativity, empathy, and ethical values.
  • Sustainability Practices: Implement eco-friendly practices in energy use, waste management, and infrastructure.
  • Sense of Responsibility: Integrate Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) to cultivate global citizenship and problem-solving skills.
  • Alignment with CSSF: Ensure safety, resilience, and sustainability in educational settings by aligning with the Comprehensive Safe School Framework (CSSF).

Challenges in Greening the Education Sector in India

Lack of Comprehensive Sustainability Policies

  • Absence of a national policy framework for integrating environmental sustainability across all education levels.

Infrastructure Deficiencies

  • Many schools, especially in rural areas, lack basic facilities, hindering the implementation of sustainable practices.

Limited Integration of Sustainability in Curricula

  • While environmental studies are included, broader sustainability concepts are not well-integrated into mainstream disciplines.

Inadequate Teacher Training and Professional Development

  • Teacher education programs lack comprehensive modules on sustainability, limiting educators’ ability to teach these concepts effectively.

Limited Availability of Green Building Materials and Technologies

  • The construction industry’s slow transition to sustainable materials and technologies, coupled with higher costs, poses challenges.

Way Forward

Eco-Influencer Campaigns

  • Use social media influencers and student leaders to promote sustainability and eco-friendly behaviours through engaging content.

Green Pedagogy Workshops

  • Organize workshops for educators on effective pedagogical approaches for sustainability, such as project-based and experiential learning.

Sustainability-Linked Procurement Policy

  • Encourage schools to use energy-efficient appliances and eco-friendly products, teaching students about responsible choices.

Environmental Entrepreneurship Competitions

  • Conduct competitions where students create innovative solutions to local environmental challenges, fostering creativity and problem-solving skills.

Conclusion

The Greening Education Partnership aims to harness the critical role of education in tackling the climate crisis.

By transforming schools into Green Schools, integrating sustainability into curricula, enhancing teacher training, and engaging communities, this initiative seeks to prepare a new generation of climate-ready learners.

Despite challenges, particularly in countries like India, the way forward involves innovative strategies and comprehensive efforts to embed sustainability into the education sector.
