ANTHROPOLOGY as an Optional
Anthropology is one of the most opted optional in UPSC. The biggest advantage of taking this optional is that it high scoring and very good study material is available in the market. If prepared well this is probably the only optional that can guarantee a score above 350+.
The support this optional gives in GS is also very high. GS topics like Social Issues, Social Justice, Governance, ethics, and essay can be covered well.
In the recent past, students with Anthropology Optional, have performed exceptionally well. All these factors make anthropology as one of the most preferred optional for the students.
Advantages of Anthropology: In a nutshell
- Anthropology is not very difficult to comprehend.
- It is easy to understand and is scoring too.
- It is a social science and is popular with humanities students. Since it is easy to understand, even science background students can attempt it safely.
- It helps with the essay paper since generally at least one essay is asked on anthropological/social issues. It will also help in the interview round. Anthropology as an optional also helps immensely in ethics paper.
- It is interesting especially if social issues matter to you. It helps you understand society and its myriad layers and functioning.
A Word of Advice
Most of the students delay their optional preparation till the last moment. As a result of this, they take admission for the optional course only after they appear in the Prelims Examination. However, this is a bad strategy.
One must comprehend that, while the GS understanding has to be of the high school standard, the understanding of the optional subject needs to be of the Post-Graduation standard.
This demands lot of revision and value addition to your class notes after the completion of your optional. This takes around 5-6 months of time. In view of the same, it is advised to take this optional much before the prelim’s examination.
